Never have the words ‘back to school’ had a sweeter ring to them. After nearly six months of lockdown and holidays, many parents will be empty husks: hollowed out by home schooling and home squabbling and desperate to get in a bit of me time. Meanwhile, the child-free will be straining at the leash. Finally, it’s their turn to escape — without having to pay peak-season prices or endure the shrieking of someone else’s little darlings.
Question is, where? Despite the declining number of air corridors, there are still plenty of options for a quick dash abroad, and in the UK the hordes will have dispersed. We’ve found eight invigorating short breaks to help you to let off steam.
Driving the Malverns
Three wheels, two seats, no roof: driving the Morgan 3 Wheeler is a throaty, low-to-the-road thrill, and you can try it for a day (£235) or a long weekend (£635), hiring direct from Morgan’s Malvern factory. Base yourself in the nearby Cottage in the Wood hotel (doubles from £114, B&B). Alongside the Severn valley views, Mark Redwood’s cooking in its 1919 restaurant makes any stay a treat. Then, get motoring over the Malvern hills, through half-timbered Ledbury and on towards the Wye Valley — with every rise and bend in the road marked by the roar of the engine and an uncontrollable grin.
